Chao Zhou Fang in PJ
[Non-halal] Chao Zhou Fang (CZF) 朝粥坊 is a new restaurant in Damansara Jaya that specialises in seafood-based porridge.
This restaurant is opened by the same family that runs Nice Soup Gang in Kepong.

The latter is one of our favourite dai chow spots in Kepong, and we absolutely enjoyed the Roe Crab Golden Porridge there (see our previous post here).
Hence, it made sense that the family (or more specifically, the second generation) decided to offer similar dishes in PJ through CFZ.
Claypot porridge at Chao Zhou Fang 朝粥坊

CZF’s special offerings are the claypot porridges – which are cooked fresh with prawn or pork bone as the main stock.

The signature dish here must be the Golden Crab Roe Porridge (RM118 for small) which uses roasted pork bone as base, and cooked with crab roe, prawns, dried scallops and Thai jasmine rice.
Canadian Scallop Prawn Porridge

For our maiden visit, we ordered the Canadian Scallop Prawn Porridge (RM78 for small) which features Canadian scallops, prawns, and dried scallops.
As the porridge uses prawn stock as the base, the porridge exhibits a lovely orange colour with a drizzle of prawn oil.

This was lovely. The prawn broth was rich with crustacean flavours – but not too strong to overpower the other ingredients.
While the table offers soy sauce, white pepper and sesame oil to enhance the porridge – we thought they were not needed at all.

The porridge had a good thick consistency, and the prawns and scallops were fresh and perfectly cooked.
White Clams in Superior Soup

On our second visit, we decided to try the White Clams in Superior Soup (RM38 for small).
This was quite enjoyable as the broth had enough ginger and Chinese wine for a heady kick. The clams were also huge and fresh.
Black Garlic Fried Pork Belly

The Black Garlic Fried Pork Belly (RM33) was ok. While the pork belly was tender and flavourful, we thought it tasted more like nam yu vs. garlic.
But the portion was a bit disappointing for the price as we got about eight pieces for RM33. We know pork is expensive, but 2-3 more pieces would be much appreciated.

As for vegetables, we recommend getting the Sizzling Claypot Kangkung (RM26). The veggies had a great crunch with wonderful flavours from dried shrimps, pork lard and chillies.

Conclusion
All in, we enjoyed the food here. We still think Nice Soup Gang offers better value for money, for CZF is a good alternative for those who reside closer to PJ.
