Dae Sam Sik Dang in Hartamas
[Non-halal] Dae Sam Sik Dang is a relatively new Korean BBQ restaurant located in Desa Sri Hartamas.
Located on the same row as the popular Busan-jib, Dae Sam Sik Dang differs from other K-BBQ joints as it specialises in Naeng Dong Samgyeopsal – aka unseasoned pork belly grilled on a hot plate, served with a variety of banchan.
We didn’t had high expectations for this restaurant, and were pleasantly surprised at the end of the meal.
Dae Sam Sik Dang in Hartamas
There are plenty of Korean BBQ in Hartamas – but not all of them are created equal.
Hence, we were quite intrigue to discover Dae Sam Sik Dang, which seems to focus only pork BBQ with only three meat items on the menu.
We arrived here on a Saturday evening at 7.30pm without any reservations, and had to write our names and contact on the white board in front of the shop.
Despite the busy night, we only had to wait for about 20 minutes to get our table.
We liked the interior of the restaurant as it reminded us of the outdoor KBBQ spot in Majang Meat Market (see our post here). They also made local versions of the popular beer/ramyeon posters featuring K-pop stars such as IU and Lee Jun-ho.
Really delicious banchan
The banchan (side dishes) here are some of the tastiest and top-quality we’ve tasted in KL.
The banchan are served in a huge metal trap not unlike the dulang used in traditional Malay and Nyonya cuisine.
Standouts among the side dishes include the kimchi (very balanced and crunchy), steamed egg, glass noodles (nutty and earthy), and beansprouts (fat and juicy).
Specialising in frozen Korean pork belly
As mentioned, Dae Sam Sik Dang specialises in Naeng Dong Samgyeopsal – which comprises 160g of high-quality pork belly grilled on a hot plate.
Dae Sam Sik Dang only use Korean female pork that are slaughtered and flash frozen immediately, before they are exported to Malaysia.
And we can taste the difference. The pork belly are cooked on a hot plate and seasoned simply with only pepper.
The pork was sweet and tender on its own, and was best enjoyed with just salt or garlic oil.
Nevertheless, the meat was also enjoyable as a ssam – wrapped with lettuce leaf with kimchi, ssamjang, and raw garlic.
We liked that they also grilled the kimchi and onion salad on the grill – which yielded a nice combo for the palate.
Seasoned pork belly
Dae Sam Sim Dang also offer pork belly marinated in gochujang (spicy sauce) and ganjang (soy sauce).
As the latter was sold out, we opted for the Gochuang Samgyeopsal (RM36). The marinade has quite a nice sweet-spicy kick with heat that slowly builds up. However we still prefer the unseasoned pork as we enjoyed tasting the natural flavours of the pork.
Summary
Aside from grilled pork belly, Dae Sam Sik Dang also serve other dishes such as fried rice, bibim myeon, and pork kimchi stew. But the two servings of grilled pork with refillable banchan was enough for us.
RECOMMENDED!
