[Pork-free] Q: How perfect doudou you want your croissant?
A: YES!
We finally checked Dou Dou Bake out on a weekday. We arrived early at 8ish but decided to tapau as we had errands to run.
Thankfully, there was no crowd with plenty of pastries still available.
The aesthetics of this space are lovely. The garden — landscaped by Sputnik Forests Labs — reminded us of a Japanese Shinto rock garden but with a wild streak. With its neutral tones and exposed columns, the interior has a very zen effect with its open space and large windows.
But linger, we did not. Take home pastries, we did.
And was it worth the hype? YES!
Sourdough croissant
The signature Sourdough Croissant (RM9) was so good!
It was so irresistibly flaky (it remained so as we finished it later in the day) and buttery (without being too oily). When pressed, the pastry doesn’t compress but crumbles (as the crust for a good croissant should). With a lovely golden hue, the outer layers were perfectly crispy with soft buttery inner layers.
Portobello danish
We also enjoyed the Portobello Danish. While priced a bit steep at RM16, the mushroom was unexpectedly moist and flavourful (the amount of salt was on point!).
Cardamom bun
The Cardamom Bun (RM10) was okay in our books. It had a more dense texture, and the cardamom reminded us of Indian sweets and kulfi.
There are plenty more pastries to warrant a revisit. Coffee’s good too – but this comes as no surprise given that Dou Dou Bake is a collaborating between the folks behind Three Little Birds and One Half.
