[Muslim-friendly] We’re on the hunt for the best croissant in town! Flaaah the Bakery was recommended a few times.
A few weeks ago, we asked our Instagram followers for the best croissant recommendations in the Klang Valley.
Flaaah the Bakery was recommended – so we finally made our way to the cafe-store in the heart of Chinatown, KL.
Flaaah the Bakery
For croissant connoisseurs, Flaaah is not an unfamiliar name.
Before it opened its physical space here on Petaling Street, Flaaah had thrived by “word-of-mouth” on social media, evidenced by its 17.6k strong followers on Instagram.
But followers don’t equal quality. Hence, we knew we had to come down to Chinatown to try these pastries for ourselves.
Flaaah in Chinatown
For the uninitiated, Flaaah started off as a micro-bakery project last year within the REX KL complex.
Under the helm of head pastry chef Ken Tan, Flaaah offers everything from classic French pastries such as Croissants and Pain au Choc, to contemporary items such as Broccoli Feta Egg and Mushroom Gouda Egg.
Flaaah occupies the ground floor of Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur. The place was busy on a Saturday afternoon, with limited seating for diners – and most tend to just order the pastries for takeaway.
We managed to secure a bench just outside (not ideal, but we couldn’t wait to dig into the pastries) and the staff was kind enough to provide us with plates and cutleries.
Good croissant
Here are our criteria for a good croissant:
1. Flaky skin with distinct layers
2. Soft and mellow inside with a good honeycomb structure
3. Enough buttery fragrance that we can eat it on its own
We are happy to report that Flaaah’s Sourdough Croissant (RM8) is one of the decent ones we’ve tried.
Although the croissant didn’t look promising, the pastry had good flakiness in the skin. We found the inside to be sufficiently soft with enough buttery fragrance.
However, the highlight of the croissant is the pronounced use of salt in the dough, which really brought out the aroma of the butter.
Broccoli Feta Egg
This savoury pastry was recommended by the counter – and it exceeded our expectations!
The exterior of the Broccoli Feta Egg (RM15) didn’t really look exciting until a cut resulted in runny yolk flowing out of the pastry.
This was very tasty. The buttery, flaky pastry was paired very well with the creamy egg with superb umami from the feta cheese and slightly charred broccoli. This was like breakfast in a pastry!
Pain au Choc
However, we didn’t fancy the Pain au Choc (RM16).
We like our Pain au Choc traditional with the requisite flaky skin, distinct layers, and the right amount of chocolate in the middle.
We found the addition of toasted marshmallow on top and the generous amount of chocolate ganache inside too indulgent for us.
Summary
All in, we consider the classic croissant to be one of the better ones in town with a saltier dough.
We also enjoyed the Broccoli Feta Egg but found the Pain au Choc to be overstuffed. We would return for the two savoury pastries, and to try their other offerings.
