Foo Hing Dim Sum Restaurant in USJ Taipan
[Non-halal] Foo Hing Dim Sum Restaurant is known for its Portuguese egg tarts and scrumptious dim sum offerings.
In fact, we have friends who raved about the Portuguese egg tarts here.
We finally visited the branch at Taipan USJ as it was located just next to our chiropractor’s office.
Foo Hing Dim Sum
Dim sum is one of our favourite brunch food.
Established in 2009, Foo Hing has been serving up delicious dim sum such as siew mai, har gao and egg tarts from its first branch in Puchong.
We’ve been told that the restaurant is often packed with a long waiting queue on weekends.
Thankfully, Foo Hing recently opened a new branch in USJ Taipan as well.
Diligent boss ensures quality is maintained
According to our chiropractor, the dim sum here is just as good as the ones at the Puchong home branch.
In fact, the boss would make his rounds at both branches every day to ensure the quality is maintained.
As we visited this branch at 11.30 am on a workday – we managed to get a table immediately.
However, the place began to fill up as the lunch working crowd started shuffling in at noon.
Foo Hing’s famous Portuguese egg tarts
Like any proper dim sum parlour, Foo Hing offers a huge variety of food items – but the No.1 must-order item here is the Portuguese egg tarts (RM3.30 apiece).
Max really enjoyed this. For one, the skin was really very flaky and crispy, with discernible layers wrapping the soft egg custard filling. It also had a nice amount of buttery fragrance but not too much to distract from the egg tart custard.
The egg custard is also very soft with a nice tofu- like texture and a nice caramelisation bits on top.
Ming did find the egg tarts to be on the sweeter side but Max thinks the sweetness is acceptable for a “sweet dessert”.
Fried radish cake has good wok hei
We both enjoyed the Fried Radish Cake (RM8) here as it had good wok hei. The radish cubes had a good firm texture with plenty of radish taste as well.
While some might find the dish a bit too spicy, we thought it worked well with the strong garlicky bits and char.
Pan-fried radish cake
The Pan-Fried Radish Cake (RM6.50) here was good as well.
Similar to the fried version, the cakes had a good firm texture with plenty of radish taste (instead of just flour).
Siew Mai and Fish Balls
We thought the regular Steamed Siew Mai (RM7.50) was just alright. While it was quite a good size, we thought the flavours could have come together a bit more harmoniously.
The Steamed Homemade Fish Balls (RM6.50) were decent as well as they had a good bouncy texture with enough natural fish taste.
Steamed Scallops Dumplings with Prawns
We also decided to try the Steamed Scallops Dumplings with Prawns (RM8) which is essentially har gao (prawn dumplings) levelled up with some scallops on top.
Ming thought it was a bit “gimmicky” but Max felt the scallops added a nice touch to the fresh and bouncy prawns. No complaints about the skin dumplings either as they were smooth and thin enough to hold the prawns in.
Crab Meat Superior Dumpling Soup
Another specialty dish that we ordered was the Crab Meat Superior Dumpling Soup (RM16).
This dish is essentially a Xiao Long Bao served in a savoury superior broth.
We enjoyed the clear but tasty broth but the surprise was really the dumpling. While the dumplings do contain the usual minced meat and chive filling – there was a surprise crab meat inside that provided some textural (and flavour) contrast.
There were some scallop and abalone bits too – which was quite decent at that price.
Summary
Overall, while we found the siew mai to be decent – the standouts here are the Portuguese egg tarts and the two radish cake dishes.
The crab meat dumpling soup and har gao with scallops are quite tasty and unique as well – but we reckon they are not must-orders for every visit.
We’ll return to try out other items on Foo Hing’s menu.
