Kapitan Tandoori House in TTDI
[Halal] Kapitan Tandoori House is a new and very popular restaurant that recently opened in TTDI.
This restaurant is the second branch outside Penang (and the first in the Klang Valley) and is known for its tandoori chicken, chicken Milani and briyani.
Whenever we are in the area, we always noticed a huge crowd at this restaurant. The crowd was quite scary and suggested a long waiting time – so we’ve made a point to check out this spot during non-peak hours.
Kapitan Tandoori House in TTDI
We finally visited Kapitan Tandoori House for late lunch during Ramadhan.
This was a good decision as the place was quite empty (obviously) save for a few tables of other non-Muslims enjoying a late lunch at 3 pm.
However, there were plenty of freshly cooked dishes at the counter as well – as the restaurant was preparing for the buka puasa (breaking of fast)crowd in the evening.
Kapitan Tandoori House’s famous Milani
Kapitan Tandoori House is known for its Milani, Nasi Briyani, and Tandoori dishes.
For the uninitiated, Milani is a type of sauce specially created by Kapitan (and only available in Penang and Kedah before this branch was opened).
Taking inspiration from Western influences, we can only describe Milani as a type of butter-based sauce that’s similar to Buttermilk sauce or cream-based carbonara gravy.
We ordered the Chicken Milani with Garlic Naan (RM18) – which consists of a grilled chicken chop topped with Milani gravy and fries, and served with coleslaw and garlic naan on the side.
While the Milani gravy was tasty, we think it just taste very similar to buttermilk sauce. In any case, it went well with the freshly cooked chicken chop. However, the fries were served cold and we thought the garlic naan was just average.
Briyani with Tandoori Chicken
However, we did enjoy the Briyani with Tandoori Chicken (RM15). While not the best briyani we’ve eaten, the rice was sufficiently fluffy and beautifully flavoured with spices.
The tandoori chicken was quite tender and moist too, with a good flavourful rub penetrating the meat.
Summary
Overall, we found the two dishes here to be decent – with the tandoori chicken as the standout.
Service here was also friendly, and the two staff even requested for us to take a picture of them.
But will we visit this place during peak hours? No.
