Hanam BBQ Bamboo Hills
[Non-halal] Hanam BBQ Bamboo Hills is the second Malaysian outlet for the famous Korean pork BBQ franchise.
Hanam BBQ’s first outlet in United Point, Kepong is said to have long queues during peak hours as the restaurant does not allow reservations.
As this new second outlet allows reservations, we managed to book a month ahead for Saturday dinner.
Hanam BBQ Bamboo Hills
Hanam BBQ is a popular Korean BBQ franchise that originated in Seoul.
Also known as Hanam Pig House 하남돼지집 in Korea, this BBQ joint differentiates itself by focusing on premium pork cuts for the grill.
We’ve heard about the Hanam outlet in Kepong – but never got around to dining there due to the long waiting time.
Hence, we were quite excited to find that it had opened a second branch here in Bamboo Hills, which allowed reservations in advance. This is always preferred in our books for a stress-free affair.
Hanam BBQ Bamboo Hills 하남돼지집 serves quality pork
The menu here at Hanam BBQ Bamboo Hills is quite simple.
Hanam only offers five different cuts of pork on its menu – from the ever-popular pork belly (samgyeopsal 삼겹살) to the leaner collar butt (teukmoksal 특목살) and prized skirt meat (galmealgiksal 갈매기살) priced at RM45-60.
While the ala-carte menu is always available – we can’t help but find good value in the sets.
Hence, we settled on the RM137 set for two pax, which comprises 180g collar butt, 150g jowl meat (hangjungsal 항정살), stew of your choice, and steamed egg with flying fish roe.
Nice to meat you
As we were quite familiar with pork belly, we were quite curious about the two cuts we took. Both meat were cooked at precisely 500°C on the grill.
Among the two cuts, we find that the collar butt (teukmoksal 특목살) to lean on the leaner side (ha!) with moderate slivers of fat in between.
While this is definitely the healthier cut, cooking finesse is definitely paramount to yield an enjoyable experience.
We did find some of the pieces to be slightly overcooked but the meat was notably fresh tasting and sweet. This cut is best enjoyed wrapped in lettuce or mountain garlic leaves (ssam 쌈) with chives salad and garlic (see video below).
The hangjungsal 항정살 is our favourite
Among the two, the jowl meat (hangjungsal 항정살) was our favourite.
Originating from the neck of the swine, this cut was remarkably light and chewy thanks to a nice marbling of fat.
Hence, the meat was incredibly tender and juicy, with a bit of crunchy char. This was best eaten with just a dip of salt to highlight the natural sweetness of the pork.
Hanam’s special 쌈 ssam
But Hanam’s specialty is more than just its cuts.
We found the 쌈 ssam here to be rather special with its offering of wild garlic leaves (san-man nuel 산마늘).
Just like how you’ll typically eat 쌈 ssam, the best way to enjoy the BBQ is to dip the meat with condiments/kimchi and wrap it with the garlic leaves.
As the leaves are brined in a type of pickled sauce – the result is a wild mix of tanginess, sweetness and savoury bite.
The calamansi wasabi condiment is also really good.
Summary
We found the kimchi stew to be decent with really tender pork pieces, but Max thoroughly enjoyed the steamed egg (gyeran jjim 계란찜) as it was light, fluffy and beautifully seasoned.
Overall, we really enjoyed our experience here at Hanam. We’ll definitely return for the special wild garlic leaves, calamansi wasabi condiment and exquisite pork cuts.
