Himawari Japanese Restaurant 日馬和里
[Non-halal] Himawari is a hidden Japanese restaurant located within the compound of The Japan Club in KL.
This restaurant was previously only exclusive for members of The Japan Club before it opened to the public.
To get here, just type in Himawari Japanese Restaurant 日馬和里 on Google, and you’ll find the location at Taman Seputeh, which is just adjacent to Midvalley.

This restaurant is not to be confused with Himawari Japanese Cuisine in Taman Desa (which serves good home-cooked Japanese food as well).

As a non-member, you’ll have to park outside the main entrance and register at the guardhouse, before making your way into the complex.
The restaurant is located on the first floor of the building.
Himawari Japanese Restaurant 日馬和里 at The Japan Club

Himawari (which means sunflower in Japanese) serves a variety of Japanese dishes – ranging from sashimi, ramen, tempura to porridge and soba.

Due to its location within The Japan Club, we found the prices to be quite reasonable. As an example, the Katsu Curry Rice Lunch Set (RM26.80) is served with soup, salad and a big portion of rice and curry. The Salmon Shioyaki costs RM19 here. For more details, please see the pictures above.
Find a library of manga here

Manga lovers would be pleased to find a library full of manga collections here, which patrons can peruse.
In fact, we found a few Japanese families enjoying their meal while reading manga at the same time.
Chicken Katsu Curry and Tempura Udon

We visited the restaurant twice – once for Saturday lunch, and once for Friday dinner.
During the first visit, we ordered the Katsu Curry Rice and Tempura Udon (RM18.00).

The former was good value for money as the pork katsu was quite big and nicely cooked. The batter was crispy, and the curry had a good balance of sweet, savoury and spicy.

No complaints about the udon either. Very reasonable portion for the price, and the noodles had the requisite chewy texture with flavourful soup. The prawn tempura were decent as well.

We also shared a plate of Sake Sashimi (RM26) which was fresh.
Ten Cha Soba and Shake Zousui

The Ten Cha Soba (RM19.80) also met expectations with its al-dente soba noodles texture, savoury dipping sauce, and a selection of tempura.

The Shake Zousui (RM19) is definitely the most interesting dish we tried here. It’s basically Japanese porridge cooked with dashi, egg, mushroom, seaweed and minced salmon. The porridge was homely and hearty.

The Yasai Itame (RM16) is a good stir-fry mixed vegetable dish to increase our fibre intake.
Conclusion
All in, we really enjoyed both our meals here. If you’re looking for no-frills and homely Japanese cooking – definitely check this place out.
