Kia Lai Cake Pastry in Penang
[Pork-free] Kia Lai Cake Pastry 加来餅鋪 is a bakery chain known for its chicken floss cakes in Penang.
This bakery (and in particular, the Yam Chicken Floss Cake) was recommended by a dear friend, and we made sure to try it here during our recent trip.
However, the floss cakes were mostly sold out when we visited the two branches in Georgetown.
But we finally got lucky at the Autocity branch in Perai on the way back to KL.
Kia Lai Cake Pastry’s famous Chicken Floss Cakes
Kia Lai Cake Pastry 加来餅鋪 specialises in three items – chicken floss cakes, cheese tarts and cream puffs.
We first attempted to purchase the floss cakes at 5pm on a Saturday at the main branch on Lebuh Melayu.
However, most of the items were sold out by then with only the Seaweed Chicken Floss Cake (RM7.90) and Pandan Chicken Floss Cake (RM9.90) left. According to the shop helper, it is best to come early in the morning (opening is 8.30am) to secure the goods.
Seaweed Chicken Floss Cake
In any case, we decided to try the Seaweed Chicken Floss Cake to get an understanding of the base flavour.
So was it good? Yes.
The chicken floss cake looks like a tofu with “mayo” spread in between two soft cakes and topped with a generous amount of chicken floss, sesame seeds and seaweed.
This was actually quite enjoyable. The cake was really soft and fluffy (similar texture to a soft butter cake) and despite the name – the “mayo” sauce was creamy but not sweet at all. The mild sweetness of the cake was contrasted by the savoury chicken floss and seaweed.
Note that it can get quite messy eating this – as the chicken floss would just get everywhere while munching. See video to get what we mean.
Yam Chicken Floss Cake
On our last day in Penang, we attempted to get the Yam Chicken Floss Cake (RM11.90) at the Jalan Gottlieb branch but it was also sold out by noon!
We made the executive decision to stop by the branch at Auto-City on the mainland, and this was where we managed to get the last piece. Yay!
So was it better? Yes.
Our friend was right. This cake has an additional thick slab of yam in the middle which provides a nice additional texture and earthy flavour to the ensemble.
This was so good that we wished there were more to purchase for home.
We also tried the Pistachio Cheese Tart (RM8.90) which was quite decent. The pistachio flavour was quite pronounced and went well with the cheesy filling in a thick pastry crust.
Summary
All in, we would definitely recommend floss cakes here. Despite the appearance, the cakes were actually not overtly sweet and we liked the generous amount of yam and chicken floss in the pieces we ate.
RECOMMENDED!
