Nice Soup Gang Restaurant 靓汤一族
[Non-halal] Nice Soup Gang Restaurant 靓汤一族 in Kepong is one of our favourite recent finds.
This dai chow place is known for its Roe Crab Golden Porridge and soup offerings, but we enjoyed every dish we tried here.
The service is excellent too!
Nice Soup Gang Restaurant in Kepong
Nice Soup Gang Restaurant is a typical neighbourhood dai chow place in Kepong.
However, we think it’s good enough to travel across the LDP Penchala Toll regularly to eat here.
Established in 1994, founder and chef Choong first honed his skills in Cantonese cuisine in Hong Kong. However, Nice Soup Gang also offers classic local dishes such as Lap Mei Fan and Poon Chooi.
Occupying two shop lots in Taman Daya, the restaurant is clean and spacious for a comfortable family meal. The restaurant also offers a second floor with karaoke services and private rooms.
Plethora of soups at Nice Soup Gang
As the name implies, Nice Soup Gang Restaurant offers a good selection of Chinese double-boiled soup on its menu.
These range from simple and hearty Cordyceps Flower and Pork Ribs soup (RM10), Hou Tou Mushroom soup (RM15) and Sarawak Pepper & Pork Stomach soup (RM35), to more luxurious entries such as Buddha Jump Over The Wall (RM90) and Fish Maw Kampung Chicken Soup (RM480 for 10 pax).
The Chinese Herbal Pork Rib Soup 清肺润肤炖排骨 (RM15 for two) we ordered was simple but delicious. It was super flavourful and savoury and we could taste the natural sweetness of the pork bones.
Nice Soup Gang’s signature dishes
But soup is not their only speciality here.
Other Signature dishes here include Roe Crab Golden Porridge (seasonal price), Abalone Pork Lard Claypot Rice (RM48), Roasted Iberico Pork Ribs (RM118) and Wild Tiger Prawn Cantonese Hor Fun (seasonal price).
To be honest, the non-signature dishes here look good too.
First visit: Roe Crab Golden Porridge
For our first visit, we decided to try the Roe Crab Golden Porridge 膏蟹黄金粥.
This is essentially a Cantonese-style porridge dish flavoured with pumpkin and seasonal crabs.
This was as good as it looked!
The crabs were really fresh and we could really taste the umami of the crabs as the roe was infused into the porridge.
The texture of the porridge was thick and creamy as it should be – but the highlights were the crabs (super fresh and sweet) and the deep seafood flavours in the congee.
The lovely orange colour is due to two factors – the pumpkin (duh), and the infusion of crab roe which gives the porridge its deep umami flavour.
The porridge – which cost RM188 with two crabs – was enough to feed both of us. The additional order of stir-fry vegetables was enough for a complete meal.
The friendly lady boss was really good in ensuring we didn’t over-order here.
Second visit: Iberico pork fried rice and steamed fish
For our second visit, we decided to bring our mum along so we could try more dishes (yay!).
The Iberico Pork Seafood Fried Rice (RM40) was stellar – full of wok hei but not dry at all.
The Iberico pork was exceptionally tender and wonderfully marinated for a deep flavour. The fried rice was one of the better ones we had in recent times.
For protein, we decided to try the Teochew-Style Steamed Red Grouper (RM97).
In inexperienced hands, Teochew-style broth can sometimes be too sour or plain, but Nice Soup Gang balances this well.
The broth has a nice tangy hit that’s not overpowering, and the flavours are tempered with enough tofu, mushrooms and preserved radish.
The fish was also cooked to perfect tenderness. More importantly, the flesh was super sweet – which is a testament to how fresh it was.
Our mum enjoyed these two dishes very much!
Summary
If our mum approves, we approve! Haha.
But honestly, every dish we tried here exceeded our expectations and even the simple stir-fry vegetables were executed well.
We also commend the friendly service and the constant playing of Yiruma’s River Flows in You provides a very zen dining experience on both occasions.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
