Today may not be Saturday, but it can be Satay-Day! R&R Satay stall located at Restoran Station 8 in SS2.
We’ve heard great things about this stall – but never got the chance to try it as we seldom come to this area for dinner.
When a dear friend said he was craving for satay, we’d thought: “Why not finally check this place out!”
R&R Satay in SS2
Opened only for dinner from 6pm onwards, R&R Satay is a stall run by a Malay couple next to a Chinese Kopitiam.
The couple has been operating here for years – and is a regular order for most who come here for dinner.
As R&R Satay is run by a Malay couple, the stall does not serve pork with Halal ingredients used.
However, patrons are free to order from the other stalls operating in the Kopitiam.
Beef, chicken and rice
The menu here is as simple as it gets.
R&R Satay only serves Chicken Satay (RM1.50 per stick), Beef Satay (RM2 per stick) and Nasi Impit (RM1).
We ordered 10 sticks of each, nasi impit. The satay comes with complimentary kuah kacang (peanut sauce), onions and cucumber.
R&R satay are thick and chunky!
First impression: the satay are thick and chunky. Look at how thick it is compared to our finger!
While both the chicken and beef were lean, they were tender and flavourful.
As an example, most vendors tend to use a lot of chicken fat and skin to really flavour the meat – sometimes too much, in our view.
While we believe R&R might opt for breast for some of the sticks (choice of meat for satay is traditionally thigh) – we found them to tender with enough natural fats to really flavour the meat.
The meat was also well-marinated as the flavours (good amount of lemongrass in the wet rub) really penetrated the meat. We enjoyed both the chicken and beef satay.
Peanut sauce was just OK
However, we thought that the peanut sauce was just okay. We would have prefered more peanut bits, and the gravy somehow lacked that tangy kick from asam jawa (tamarind).
The kuah kacang definitely has a good amount of spice, sweetness and savouriness – but alas, it needed the tang.
Teochew Stewed Duck Rice
To completed our meal, we also ordered Half a Duck (RM36) from the Teochew Stewed Duck stall, with Salted Vegetables (RM2), Stewed Peanuts (RM2), and Beancurd (RM2.50).
This stall seems to be very popular with the patrons – but we thought it was just average.
While the duck was tender, we prefer a stronger herbally taste in the gravy (like our favourite at Kam Heong in PJ State).
We also thought the braised vegetables to a bit bland (not salty or sour enough), but the beancurd was a standout as it was flavourful with a good firmness.
Decent Hokkien Mee
We also ordered Hokkien Mee (RM10) to share. Overall, a pretty average plate as well.
While the noodles had good seasoning and balance of saltiness and savouriness – it lacked wok hei to be truly outstanding.
Summary
Overall, Restoran Station 8 is a decent spot if you’re looking for dishes to please everyone in the family without burning a hole in the pocket.
We definitely enjoyed the satay (even more than the popular Haji Samuri) as the meat was lean but flavourful, and not burnt. But alas, Haji Samuri’s kuah kacang is superior to R&R’s.
As for the Teochew Braised Duck and Hokkien Mee – they were decent, but will not be the main reasons to visit this place.
