[Halal] SALTed in Mutiara Damansara serves one of the best Sarawak Laksa in town!
In fact, our Sarawakian friends pointed out SALTed to serve some of the best and authentic Sarawak dishes in the Klang Valley. And we agree.
SALTed in Mutiara Damansara
Run by a Sarawakian couple Sofia Yusof and Chai Wee Loong, SALTed serves an array of Sarawakian dishes such as Sarawak Laksa, Kolo Mee (or Mee Sapi), Belacan Beehoon, Kacangma and Tomato Crispy Mee.
And to be clear, SALTed doesn’t mean that their dishes are heavily salted. It simply means “Sarawak Authentic Local Taste Extra Delicious”! Haha!
SALTed’s Three-Layer Tea
We arrived here on a Saturday afternoon at 11.15 am to find the restaurant slightly busy. However, the restaurant was already packed by noon.
Besides the usual coffee and teh tarik on the drinks menu, SALTed also serve Teh C Ping Special with Gula Apong (RM7) – which we believe is their take on the famous Three-Layer Tea in Sarawak.
Max first tasted this drink in Kuching in the early-2000s – and found SALTed’s version to be authentic and refreshing. The drink is basically a combination of tea, evaporated milk, and Gula Apong (or Gula Melaka, in some cases) which gives it a distinctive light sweetness incomparable to white sugar or condensed milk.
Both Ming and our mom enjoyed the drink too.
Sarawak laksa – in three levels
Now, onto the main event! SALTed’s Sarawak Laksa is available in three options – Basic, Original, and Special.
For RM8, the Basic is the most standard noodle serving that comes with beansprouts, chicken strips, cuttlefish, and shredded omelette.
For an extra RM3.50, the Original comes with three regular-sized prawns in lieu of cuttlefish. Finally, the Special (RM24) comes with three large-sized sea prawns and cuttlefish!
Sarawak laksa is delicious!
We really enjoyed the Sarawak laksa! The broth here is super tasty as it had a good amount of spices in the rempah, with a good touch of santan for creaminess for a full-flavoured slurp!
The squeeze of lime and sambal helps to kick things up a notch, but we felt the broth was already flavourful on its own.
Compared to our favourite laksa at Aunt Christina’s (check out our post here), the broth here is definitely more creamy due to more santan used- but both really hit the spot for a satisfactory meal.
The extra large prawns in the Special bowl were super fresh, sweet and plump! We really enjoyed sucking the natural juices from the shells.
Our mom also enjoyed her Original bowl – as the regular-sized prawns were fresh and sweet as well.
Kolo Mee with beef
SALTed’s Kolo Mee is more akin to Mee Sapi where soy sauce is used, instead of pork lard for the Chinese-style kolo mee.
The Kolo Mee here can be served with Beef slices, chicken mushroom, seafood, lamb, or smoked duck.
Our Kolo Mee with Beef (RM11.50) was tasty! Despite the umassuming colour, the noodles were properly seasoned with lovely umami from shallot oil. We enjoyed the springy egg noodles, and the beef slices were nicely seasoned with salt.
Kacangma – a rare dish in KL
We were happy to also find Kacangma (RM14) served here.
A popular Hakka confinement meal in Sarawak, Kacangma is a chicken dish cooked with ginger and motherwort as the core ingredients. We had our Sarawakian friends mention this dish a million times – so we were elated to finally try the dish here at SALTed.
The Kacangma certainly has a distinctive flavour. While it reminded us of Ginger Wine Chicken (another popular confinement dish), the Kacangma gravy has a more herbally and earthy flavour thanks to the motherwort, with a hint of sweetness from the ginger.
The chicken was tender too. We imagine this dish will go very well with white rice.
Summary
Overall, we really enjoyed the dishes here! The Sarawak Laksa is definitely one of the best Halal ones in the Klang Valley, and we enjoyed the Mee Kolok/Sapi too!
We’ll definitely come back to try their Tomato Crispy Mee and Mee Jawa Sarawak.
RECOMMENDED!
