[Non-halal] There’s no such thang as too much ramen!
We checked out this new ramen place – Shin Haru Tei – in Jaya One.
Yes, we all know the famous Menya Shi-Shi Do (our review here) is also located here – but we also enjoyed the ramen here with less crowd and waiting time.
The ramen here turns out to be very authentic and satisfying; we learned that the chef had spent 15 years honing his culinary skills in Japanese street food and six years in ramen.
Miso ramen
We ordered the Miso Ramen (RM18.90) which comes with chasu, egg, seaweed, black fungus and spring onion. The miso broth was tasty without being too overpowering and complemented the soft and tender chasu well. Noodles were al-dente.
Ooki chasu ramen
The show-stopper however, has to be their signature – Ooki Chasu Ramen (RM28.90) – which comes with a big slab of pork belly.
For this, we opted for their tonkotsu broth – which is boiled for 12 hours daily with pork bones, trotters and skin. We enjoyed the broth – it was sufficiently umami-rich without being too “porky” and creamy (as some tonkotsu broth tends to do). Hence, we did not feel too jelak at the end of the meal.
The chasu is very similar to our Chinese char siew (in terms of char and meat-fat ratio) with a distinct Japanese taste as it is marinated with soy and mirin, and topped with sesame seeds.
Meat was flavourful with a nice sweet-savoury balance and we liked that the fat was melt-in-the-mouth.
Overall, we enjoyed the ramen here. Do check it out as an alternative to the other popular one. Besides ramen, Shin Harutei also serves udon, rice bowls, and nabe.
