Sister Wah Beef Brisket Noodles 華姐清湯腩 in HK
[Non-halal] Sister Wah Brisket Noodles 華姐清湯腩 was the first meal we both really enjoyed in Hong Kong.
Located in Causeway Bay, this small establishment known for its beef briskets braised in stock for hours to yield a clear but flavourful broth.
Sister Wah Beef Brisket in Causeway Bay
We enjoyed the noodles at Sister Wah Beef Brisket Noodles 華姐清湯腩 so much that we visited this spot twice during our recent HK trip.
Located at Electric Road in Causeway Bay, this restaurant is easily accessible by public transport as it is only a short stroll away from the Lau Sin Street tram stop and Tin Hau MTR station.
We visited Sister Wah twice for dinner – and managed to get a table without needing to queue at all.
Note that the establishment is quite small, so be prepared to share a table with strangers during peak hours – which is the case for most restaurants in HK.
The beef brisket is god-tier
On our first visit, we ordered the Beef Brisket Noodle Soup (HKD70) which is probably the most ordered dish here.
This bowl was phenomenal. To be clear (pun intended), we like our beef broth on the clearer side with not too heavy herbal or oily flavours. This broth was deceptively flavourful despite its clear countenance. It was sweet with a pure beef stock base. The flat rice noodles (hor fun) were slurp-worthy as well.
However, the highlight for this bowl had to be the briskets. These were god-tier and had the best cut/texture of beef we’ve tried in HK. Braised for hours with herbs, the brisket cuts were sweet and tender with no gamey taste at all.
Curry Beef Brisket Noodles
We also enjoyed the Curry Beef Brisket Noodles (HKD70). The curry was mildly spicy with a touch of five-spice powder that differentiates it from the curry we have in Malaysia. The briskets were also tender.
However, we thought the Wanton in Soup (HKD70 for eight huge pieces) was just OK. While the dumplings were plump with soft silky skin, we didn’t enjoy the heavy addition of greens in the filling.
Beef Tendon Noodles
For our second visit, we tried the Beef Tendon Noodles (HKD70). The tendon was cooked perfectly to yield a bouncy texture with plenty of flavours. But we do prefer the brisket slightly more than the tendon.
We also enjoyed the Dan Dan Noodles with Beef Tendon (HKD80). The egg noodles used were springy that’s quite similar to ramen, which we liked.
The soup also has a nice spicy bite to it, with the Sichuan pepper providing a bit of “nuttiness” – which reminded us a bit of tonkotsu ramen.
Braised Daikon
The Braised Daikon in Beef Sauce (HKD20) is a popular side order here. They were tender and went well as a supplement to the main noodle dishes.
The Boiled Choy Sum in Beef Sauce (HKD25) was the staple order for the two visits.
Summary
We prefer Sister Wah to the other equally popular Kau Kee Beef Noodles in Central. In general, we found the beef cuts for the former to be superior, and the beef broth was more flavourful than Kau Kee. RECOMMENDED!
