Sot Bab, Sunway
[Non-halal] Sot Bab (rice in pot or 솥밥) is one of those dishes we enjoy eating in Seoul, but are less common in KL.
So we were quite excited to discover a new restaurant that specialises in this dish.
What is Sot Bab?
Literally translated as “rice in a pot”, sot bab is a dish where rice is cooked with various toppings in a metal pot. As the rice is kept in the pot throughout the meal, it always remains warm.
A thick layer of crispy scorched rice (known as nurungji) is often found at the bottom of the pot. At the end of the meal, hot water/barley tea is added to soften the rice crust – and is enjoyed as a digestif.
Sot Bab in Sunway Geo Avenue
Newly opened last year, Sot Bab is run by Auntie Jun who has been residing in Malaysia for 15 years.
Auntie Jun had a very friendly demeanour as she welcomed her diners and explained the best way to enjoy the meal.
Beef Ribs and Pork Bulgogi Sot Bab
There are plenty of Sot Bab sets to choose from – including the Beef Ribs Sot Bab (RM45) which is a popular order here.
The beef ribs were tender with a sweet-savoury marinade that pairs well with the warm rice. We liked the addition of mushrooms, sweet potato and broccoli in the pot, which makes for a wholesome and complete dish.
Like any Korean spots, the set comes with plenty of refillable side dishes (banchan) here as well. All of them were delicious.
We also enjoyed the Pork Bulgogi (RM45) here. The portion is really generous for the price with plenty of tender pork belly strips cooked with carrots, onion and zucchini.
Sundubu Jjigae and Grilled Mackerel
For something a bit more hearty, go for the Seafood Sundubu Jjigae (RM38). The stew has a good balance of spice and savouriness – and the seafood was fresh.
If you like a clean meal, the Grilled Mackerel (RM45) should hit the spot.
Conclusion
We enjoyed the food here on both occasions, and there are plenty of items on the menu that warrants many revisits. RECOMMENDED!
