“Sun, it rises up,
Jom, let’s get some roasted duck –
Succulent, crispy.”
– a TKM haiku
[Non-halal] Although we’ve spent all of our lives in PJ, we rarely eat here at Restoran Sunrise. In fact, this is probably our second time in more than a decade.
Personally, Ming enjoys the roast duck from the stall outside Loong Foong Seafood Restaurant (a few minutes drive away), while Max grew up eating the roast duck next to 99 Speed Mart in PJ Old Town.
So how does the Sunrise roast duck fare?
Tender and succulent meat Extra helping of crispy duck skin from the neck RM34 for half a bird is a good price vs. its peers
Firstly, the colour is a lovely and enticing golden brown – having been roasted for hours over charcoal fire in a stainless steel oven.
The meat is tender and succulent. Skin is crispy, and we love that they gave additional crispy skin from the neck for us to indulge. In terms of flavour, we like that it’s not too salty although the herbal concoction is too mild for us.
The sauces here are the standout, in our view. Made with soy sauce and duck broth, the dipping sauce complemented the duck well with a hint of sweetness.
The chilli sauce was also unique as it was more citrus-y and acidic compared to the usual ones we eat elsewhere.
The duck came with fragrant rice and a sour cabbage soup.
Overall, the RM34 we paid for half a bird is quite a good price (compared to its peers in the area). Sunrise remains a popular joint for many as we saw the ducks sell out by 1pm.
