Tap Room KL Bamboo Hills
[Pork-free] Tap Room KL Bamboo Hills offers quite a nice space for leisurely dinner with friends and family.
However, reservations are recommended if you want to get a spot here. The modern pub is also quite popular for private events as well.
We’ve managed to secure an outdoor table one Saturday evening next to the fountain. Arguably, we arrived an hour early and had to wait before the al-fresco area was opened for service at 6pm.
Thankfully, the weather was kind that day as well.
Tap Room KL in Bamboo Hills
Like most of the restaurants at Bamboo Hills, we thought Tap Room’s space was impeccably designed. This is truly a space that’s perfect for special celebrations with friends, or a casual spot to wind down at the end of the night.
Tap Room KL offers quite a diverse spread of dishes on its menu – ranging from meat platters to Japanese-inspired rice bowls, to pastas, burgers and Asian rice dishes.
However, Tap Room also houses three establishments under its roof – Pizza Duo which serves pork-free Neapolitan pizzas, Malaysian craft beer brand Paperkite Brewing Co, and Tap Tap – a cocktail bar.
Malaysian homegrown craft beer
PaperKite Brewing Co is a new Malaysian independent craft beer brand that serves its beer on tap in Tap Room.
This venture is run by Alvin Lim, one of the co-founders of Taps Beer Bar in Bukit Bintang.
Brewed in small batches with no added artificial preservatives and chemicals, PaperKite was recently awarded Gold in the 2023 World Beer Awards.
PaperKite offers four types of beer (and stout) on tap – Indian Pale Ale, Copper Ale, Oatmeal Stout and Pale Ale priced from RM23 per glass.
If you’re new to PaperKite, the best way to sample their offerings is the PaperKite Flight (RM55) which comprises four glasses of each offering.
There’s a recommended order to enjoy the beer and here’s what we thought: Pale Ale tasted like any typical pale ale, Copper Ale has a more pronounced bitterness on the front-end, and the stout has a lovely chocolatey finish.
Our favourite was the IPA, as we enjoyed the citrusy tangy notes.
Pizza Duo at Bamboo Hills
We’ve heard great things about Pizza Duo – a pizzeria run by a husband-and-wife team who studied the craft in Naples, Italy.
As such, we decided to just order from Pizza Duo for our dinner here.
All of the pizzas here are baked in the huge Stefano Ferrara oven with dough that’s been fermented for 72 hours.
The Shroomami (RM68) seems to be the most popular choice here – Neapolitan pie topped with a medley of cheeses and truffle oil but we decided to go with the Spicy Pep (RM48) and CLOY (RM68).
First thing first – the crust meets expectations as it was chewy and crispy in all the right ways with a decent amount of char.
We did enjoy the Spicy Pep as the mild spiciness of pepperoni was nicely tempered by the tanginess of tomatoes and red onions, with a touch of sweetness from chilli honey.
However, we thought the Korean-inspired CLOY (short for Crash Landing into You – the popular K-drama) was just okay.
The kimchi lacked tanginess in our view as it was not fermented enough, but the sweetness from the beef bulgogi was a nice touch.
Fritti Duo was just ok
We didn’t enjoy the Fritty Duo (RM32) though – which comprises deep-fried lasagna and mushroom arancini.
Somehow the deep-fried lasagna didn’t translate well for us as it lacked the juiciness of a fresh lasagna.
While the arancini was decent – the combo was ultimately too rich or jelak for us.
Summary
Our experience here was pretty mid.
While the space was lovely and the service was attentive, the food was just a bit mixed. Nevertheless, we’d still think Tap Room is a nice spot for a casual night/day out.
And there’s plenty of dishes on the menu to warrant a revisit.
