Uo Shin Hartamas
[Non-halal] We’ve been quite skeptical about places that offer “cheap” sushi – especially the Shin Zushi restaurants in the Klang Valley, and the long queues that come with them.
We’ve been disappointed with places like Sushi Zanmai and typically avoid conveyor belt sushi places.
However, our friend did recommend us to try Uo Shin in Hartamas, which is run by the same folks behind Shin Zushi.

Uo Shin is known for its hand-pressed sushi offerings, and is considered a more “atas” iteration of Shin Zushi. They also offer online reservations – which help to reduce the waiting time as seen at Shin Zushi branches.

Last Wednesday, we decided to check out the spot for dinner. Despite having no reservations – we managed to get a spot at the counter after only a 10-minute wait at 7pm.
Uo Shin in Hartamas
It’s true. Uo Shin do offer a more elevated “ambience” and the service here is on par with any good Japanese restaurants.
Order is taken on the tablet, and a quick peruse of the menu (and the tables around us) shows that the sushi and sashimi are the “must-orders” here. And they did not disappoint.
The nigiri were good

We ordered the Salmon Belly (RM4), Unagi (RM3.50), Garlic Salmon Soy Sauce (RM4) and Chutoro Nigiri (RM15).

We like that they provide the option to season the rice with soy sauce, and to be honest – both versions were good. The fish were fresh and sweet – and very good for under RM5. The rice was also warm and seasoned with enough vinegar.

For RM12, the Dragon Maki was also done well – crispy deep-fried ebi rolled with avocado and rice.

Another highlight of the meal has to be the Mini Salmon Mango Avocado Don (RM12). On paper, the combo might sound a bit weird but it worked! The sweetness of the mango paired well with fresh salmon – but the kicker is the warm rice that is seasoned with home-made shoyu.

The Soft Shell Crab Salad (RM19) was also delectable as the crab is deep-fried with batter with a hint of spice – which went well with the greens and sesame dressing.

No faults with the Chawan Mushi (RM7) and Miso Soup (RM4) either.
Conclusion
All in, we were very pleased with the meal. The dishes were fresh and executed well – and superseded a lot of other Japanese restaurants in terms of quality and pricing. RECOMMENDED!
