Xigong Seafood Restaurant
[Non-halal] Xigong Seafood Restaurant is one of our favourite food discoveries in Kepong.
Located not too far away from Desapark City, this restaurant is quite popular with the locals.
On weekends, the restaurant would require the assistance of RELA personnel to ensure parking is not an issue in this residential area.
But is the food worth it? Yes.
Xigong Seafood Restaurant in Kepong
Xigong Seafood Restaurant is located in Taman Kepong Baru.
This restaurant occupies four shoplots at the end of a commercial row, and is known for its seafood dishes that are quite delicious and reasonably priced.
For large groups, it is recommended to make reservations. There are also some dishes that require an order in advance – including the Claypot Crab Baked Rice which we did for our third visit here.
Other dishes that we enjoyed here include the Fried Rice and Coconut Juice Prawns.
Our first visit
For our maiden visit, we ordered only a handful of dishes since it was just the two of us.
We heard amazing things about the Fried Rice (RM14) here and it did not disappoint.
It met all our requirements for a good fried rice: not too dry or wet, good rice grain separation, enough wok hei and good saltiness. The rice has bits of char siew and long beans as well.
Our friends who joined us for our return visit also enjoyed the fried rice.
The Coconut Juice Prawns (RM60) was another stellar dish. Served in a claypot, the gravy reminded us of buttermilk with curry leaves, dried shrimps, onions and tomato. There’s also a hint of spiciness. The claypot yielded seven big prawns that were fresh and succulent.
Loofah Tofu (RM18) is one dish we always order and the one here was good. Tofu was very fresh and the loofah was cooked to a lovely texture.
Meanwhile, the Stir-Fry Vegetables (RM20) met requirements for all three visits.
Our second visit
On our second visit, we decided to have white rice so we could order more dishes.
The Mongolian Mantis Prawn (RM30) was quite a nice surprise. The prawns were cooked with crispy batter, and the sauce that coated the morsels was a good mix of sweet, sour and spicy. This went well with the rice.
However, we thought the Salt and Pepper Squid (RM30) was a bit dry although the squid was nicely cooked – i.e. not rubbery or hard.
On the other hand, the Signature “Beancurd” Beancurd (RM20) was quite enjoyable as it comprises a mix of beancurd and “tau kan” (a type of tofu with a firmer texture) in a thick savoury gravy.
Our third visit
For our third visit, we decided to invite more friends so we could try more signature dishes here.
The Claypot Baked Crab Rice (M220 for two crabs) is one of the most recommended dishes here that requires booking in advance – so we knew we had to try it.
However, we thought it was just alright.
While the rice was nicely seasoned with enough ginger kick and savouriness from the soy sauce and Chinese wine, we wished it had more crab flavours infused into the dish.
The two crabs were huge and fresh, But as mentioned, it appears that the crabs were just baked just on top of the rice – so no chance for the juices to seep into the rice.
Nevertheless, the portion was good enough to feed seven adults and two toddlers (among seven dishes with two rice dishes we ordered that evening).
The Butter Sotong (RM45 for medium) had better reception as we all enjoyed the crispy batter and well-cooked sotong pieces.
Our friends also enjoyed the Claypot Curry Grouper Fish Head (RM75) as the gravy had enough curry spices and veggies to go with the rice. No complaints about the grouper as well.
The Sweet and Sour Crabs (RM220 for two crabs) had a mixed reception. While the crabs were fresh, sweet and juicy – we wished the gravy had a more spicy kick. On highsight, we should have ordered the Coconut Juice Crabs.
Nevertheless, the Mantou (RM5) were soft and supple and went well with both the curry and sweet and sour crab gravies.
Summary
Overall, we were quite pleased with our three meals here – and our friends also agreed on the third visit.
Xigong Seafood is definitely a place we would recommend for those venturing into Kepong and looking for good Chinese stir-fry dishes.
