[Muslim-friendly] 1978 Cucur Udang is our favourite stall for prawn fritters!
We first discovered this stall in Sea Park a few years ago after visiting our favourite Aunty Christina’s Sarawak Laksa at a coffee shop nearby.
And we’ve been regularly ordering from this stall since, as we can’t get enough of their freshly-cooked crispy prawn fritters.
1978 Cucur Udang in Sea Park
1978 Cucur Udang started as a home-based business in PJ’s Kampung Chempaka more than 40 years. It used to operate as a stall nearby before they decided to occupy half a shop lot here at Sea Park.
They have since opened another branch in Damansara Uptown, with another stall that opens regularly at bazaars.
Note that 1978 is a Muslim-friendly establishment as the ingredients are sourced from NSK, Tesco, and pasar borong.
Chinese-style cucur udang
1978 Cucur Udang serves the Chinese-style prawn fritters which differ from the Malay version which has a softer texture and yellow tinge from the addition of turmeric.
The Cucur Udang (RM1.50 apiece) here has a golden hue with a crispy edge and a chewy centre.
Fresly fried, not greasy
We really enjoy these fritters as they are usually served warm and crispy, as they are freshly fried in batches throughout the day.
When eaten hot, these fritters are at their crunchiest. They are also never too greasy as they are fried at the right temperature – so they do not absorb any excess oil.
We also never detected any unpleasant oil taste – which may occur for some fried food when they are cooked in oil that’s been used too many times.
Generous filling
Taste-wise, we find that they are seasoned just nicely (the right amount of salt) and never too starchy.
They are generous with the fillings of chopped yam beans and chives to make each bite a satisfactory one.
We also liked that they used small prawns for their fritters – hence there is no risk of swallowing hard shells and tails.
Max had a tail stuck in his throat once from eating a cucur udang – and it was the most unpleasant experience ever!
Verdict
Overall, we recommend these as a great snack for breakfast, lunch, or tear as they are open daily from 7am until 7pm.
They serve their fritters with chilli sauce, but we always prefer to eat the fritters on their own. RECOMMENDED!
