When in Korea, must eat Korean Fried Chicken. When we were in Seoul, we tried two popular Korean Fried Chicken (KFC) franchises. Among the two, BHC Myeongdong was our favourite.
BHC Myeongdong
It is safe to assume that everyone likes fried chicken – and the Korean version of the dish is among the most popular globally.
In our research for Seoul, we learned that there are four top fried chicken franchises in Korea: BBQ Chicken, BHC, KyoChon, and Goobne.
Here in Malaysia, KyoChon is one of the more popular franchises – and its Soy Garlic fried chicken is one of the preferred offerings.
Nevertheless, we were very excited to try some of the popular KFCs that are not available here in Malaysia (note: BHC had since opened its first Malaysian outlet in Retail 163 Mont Kiara).
BHC – a better and healthier choice
We visited the BHC in Myeongdong, as it was the closest to our hotel.
BHC means “Better & Happier Choice”, and is one of the most popular KFC chains in the country with 1,000 stores nationwide.
BH is particularly known for the Sunflower Fried Chicken – fried chicken coated in classic batter and double-fried in sunflower oil, and the Sweet and Sour Chicken – fried chicken topped with sweet-and-sour powder seasoning.
Apart from that, BHC also serves Spicy Sauce Chicken for those who prefer some heat in their fried chicken.
Fried chicken and beer – the perfect pair
Despite arriving at 6.10 pm on a Thursday evening, the store was already packed with customers.
After placing our orders, we were promptly served appetizers – pickled radish cubes and corn crackers.
Also, Koreans typically eat KFC with beer – so we made sure to order a pint of Cass draft beer.
Sunflower Fried Chicken
We ordered a serving of Half-and-Half Chicken (KRW20,000 or USD15) and opted for the Sunflower Fried Chicken and Sweet & Sour flavours.
This serving comprises about six sizeable chicken pieces for each flavour – including drumsticks, wings, thighs, and breasts.
Among the two, the Sunflower Fried Chicken was our favorite. The batter was incredibly light and crispy, with seasoning that just had the right amount of salt to compliment the natural flavour of the chicken.
The sunflower oil resulted in a very clean-tasting flavour, and yielded one of the crispiest batters we’ve eaten anywhere.
The chicken was also incredibly juicy and tender. In fact, the breast meat was among the most tender and juicy we’ve eaten – which is a testament to the cooking process.
Sweet & Sour Chicken
However, we did not enjoy the Sweet & Sour Chicken as much.
We believe that these chicken pieces were coated and fried in the same batter as the Sunflower Chicken, but coated in extra sweet & sour powder seasoning.
The extra seasoning tasted exactly as its name – but we thought it overpowered the natural taste of the chicken.
Summary
Overall, we enjoyed our experience here at BHC, and agree that fried chicken and beer make for a perfect pair. The portion was also more than enough for the two of us.
We definitely recommend the Sunflower Fried Chicken – its crispy batter and juicy chicken makes for one of the best fried chickens we’ve eaten. However, skip the Sweet & Sour Chicken.
