[Pork-free] EMILY means Every Minute I Love You! We had a lovely time at Emily Darling Café in Penang.
In case you’re wondering, EMILY does indeed mean Every Minute I Love You, according to its co-owner Danny Yeong.
Emily Darling Café in Penang
Located on Jalan Penang and close to the ever-popular Hameediyah, Emily Darling Café is probably the prettiest café we visited during our recent Penang trip.
Opened amidst the pandemic last year, Emily Cafe Darling offers lovely cakes, pastries, and natural flower tea in a beautifully-curated space filled with flora.
The space was made lovelier with all the Christmas decorations when we visited in December.
Emily Darling Café offers lovely cakes and pastries
Upon stepping into the café, we were immediately greeted by the super-friendly Danny – who painstakingly explained to us all of the pastries and cakes offered here.
We learned that Danny and his partner Marcus opened this cafe last year, after taking a sourdough class with Old Man Teh (a well-known local pastry chef who’s been training bakers locally). All of the baked goods are made daily here in the kitchen and ready for sale at 9 am.
Onde-onde in a croissant
All of the pastries on display looked lovely but we finally decided on two croissants – the Croissant et Coco (RM14) and Pain au Chocolat (RM12).
The Pain au Chocolat had a nice crispy exterior with a good amount of dark chocolate filling, but we did find it a bit dry. However, we loved the the Croissant et Coco – which was essentially onde-onde in croissant form.
The molten palm sugar and grated coconut filling were sweet and moist, which contrasted well with the pastry, and flaky almond and coconut shavings on top.
Chocolate indulgence
The Chocolate Indulgence (RM20) is a lovely chocolate sponge cake layered with mousse and finished with a ganache on top.
We enjoyed the play of texture between all the components, although we struggled to cut into the ganache at the beginning.
Made entirely of flowers with no caffeine, the Rose Tea (RM24 for a teapot for two) was very enjoyable and a good accompaniment to all the sweet treats we ate here.
