When we saw our friend, @mumumchan’s Instagram post on Fish Brothers, we were immediately intrigued and went to check the place out!
Located in a quiet part of Kampung Sg. Kayu Ara, the place was very lively despite having only opened for a few months. It was almost full house.
The unique dish names stood out – e.g. Ganja Fish(!), Kuo Kuo Claypot Curry Fish, and Drunk Fish in Bathtub. But it was not just for the sake of it – the dishes were indeed different than what you find in typical Chinese seafood joints. Most importantly, the seafood was VERY VERY FRESH and VERY VERY DELICIOUS.
Drunk fish in bathtub
We ordered the Drunk Fish in Bathtub (RM48 for tilapia). While it looked simple, the broth was very appetizing thanks to the unique combination of Chinese yellow wine, rice and white wine. The alcoholic sweetness was further lifted with the fragrance of lemongrass, garlic and ginger. The tilapia was steamed perfectly – no fishy smell and flesh was super tender.
Nyanyang lala queen
We also enjoyed the Nyanyang Lala Queen (small for RM28). The clams were super fresh and the curry had the right amount of creaminess and spiciness. This one goes very well with rice.
3 days make-up pork belly
The 3 Days Make-up Pork Belly (RM18 for 1 block) is an interesting name for a dish but it made sense. According to the description, it took three days to make this: “1st day Malamite, 2nd day steamed and air-dried, 3rd day fried and left to cool down in special sauce”. The result: Tender flavorful sweet-savoury pork belly with melt-in-the-mouth fat with sliced pineapple in between. This was so MIND-BLOWINGLY GOOD! Must order!
For green, we opted for the Stir-fry Spinach with Bitter-gourd (small for RM15). The addition of the gourd actually worked well – something I would probably replicate at home.
We will definitely return! One of the Fish brothers said to come back and try their Top Japan Lala King and Ganja Fish. We found out that they used to operate in Kepong but decided to move here to PJ. Well, we are not complaining! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
