Good View Kopitiam in Section 17
[Non-halal] The Sang Har Mee (freshwater prawn noodles) stall at Good View Kopitiam in Section 17 was recently recommended by foodies.
However, we found the noodles to be underwhelming during our visit.
Sang Har Mee at Good View Kopitiam
The Sang Har Mee stall here is run by chef Tan, who has previously worked at Green View Restaurant (which is also known for the same dish – see our post here) for 20 years.
Chef Tan operates this stall from 12pm onwards and also offers other noodle dishes such as Cantonese Ying Yong and Hokkien Mee.
Given Chef Tan’s previous experience at Green View Restaurant – it is no surprise that Sang Har Mee is the most popular dish here.
These freshwater prawns are sourced from Indonesia and are sold by the kg. Our plate of Sang Har Mee cost us RM122 for a decently sized prawn – which was adequate to feed two of us.
Sang Har Mee was underwhelming
Chef Tan uses crispy yee mee for the Sang Har Mee here (instead of koay teow) with luscious egg-based gravy served on top. This is similar to the one served at Green View Restaurant.
Unfortunately, we found the dish here to be underwhelming.
While the gravy was savoury enough, it somehow lacked the freshwater prawn umami. We also wished for a stronger ginger kick as well.
But here’s the major dealbreaker: the freshwater prawn just lacked natural sweetness, and was overcooked. Maybe the prawn we received was an “off-day” crustacean.
On the positive, the prawn was immaculately prepared and we liked that the leg meat was already peeled for us.
Hokkien mee is decent
From 4pm onwards, there is an adjacent stall next to chef Tan that serves Hokkien Mee and Cantonese Noodles.
The chef behind the wok is an old-timer uncle.
We found the Hokkien Mee (RM12) to be decent. It had good wok hei and the gravy was quite flavourful. While not spectacular – we thought it was a decent option among many famous Hokkien Mee joints in the central PJ area.
Summary
As you can tell by now, we found the Sang Har Mee dish here to be underwhelming.
As a comparison, the Sang Har Mee we had at Restaurant Green View was sweeter and better executed – and we received great table service too. Also note that we paid RM169 for the Sang har mee at Green View, which was an acceptable premium when all things are considered.
We also find the Sang Har Mee at Restoran Pan Heong in Batu Caves to be much superior (see post here).
