Magokoro Teahouse is a popular Japanese teahouse located in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The teahouse offers Japanese tea ceremony, where customers can enjoy Usucha (薄茶) or Koicha (濃茶) with wagashi.
This teahouse has a lovely Japanese teahouse interior with tatami mats, but the best seats in the house has to be the counter facing the zen garden.
Magokoro offers everything from traditional matcha to loose tea
Magokoro offers quite an extensive menu as it offers everything from traditional tea to fusion drinks that feature high quality green tea.
Magokoro Teahouse sources the best tea from award-winning tea farms in Japan. Traditionalists can opt for the Traditional Ceremonial Tea Sets that can be served with Wagashi, priced from THB199 to THB499 (USD5-14). The sets are offered with a variety of matcha that can be prepared in the Koicha (thick matcha with concentrated powder) or Usucha (higher water-to-power ratio) method.
We loved the fact that they can offer both versions for the same set. Needless to say, the Ikigai matcha we ordered was thick and rich, with a lingering bitterness at the end. This paired well with the delicate wagashi.
For those who are less used to thick matcha, Magokoro also offers loose tea leaves in pots. Selection includes genmacha, hojicha and award-winning gyokuro tea.

Summary
If you’re looking for some healing time in a zen space, Magokoro Teahouse is definitely worth checking out. In fact, it was one of our favourite experiences during our Chiang Mai trip, and is on the list of our Top Nine Cafes of 2023 (see list here).
