Mimico Coffee in Chiayi
If you’re in Chiayi Taiwan and seeking coffee, check out Mimico Coffee.
We loved the rustic feel of this cafe, which is housed in a 60-year-old heritage building built with timber from the Alishan forest.
History lesson: The Japanese colonial government built the 111-year-old forest railway from Chiayi to Alishan forest to facilitate logging. Alishan is known for its beautiful red cedar trees and lush forests.
The rustic railway now transports people instead of logs – and we recommend taking the Alishan Forest Railway for a lovely scenic ride to the mountains.
Mimico Coffee 秘密客咖啡館 in a heritage building
Mimico Coffee offers a great selection of filter coffee, espresso, non-caffeinated drinks, snacks, and desserts.
The baristas were really friendly and they explained the history of the building/city, and also recommended non-touristy local spots for food (see our Turkey rice post coming soon).
Mimico Coffee has a basement level
Do check out the basement level of this cafe. It is not unusual for these heritage buildings to have sub-basement levels – as they were added as shelter from bombings in case of war.
