Soup Restaurant One Utama 三盅兩件
[Non-halal] Soup Restaurant One Utama 三盅兩件 is one of our favourite spots for dinner whenever we are in the mall.
Originating from Singapore as part of the Soup Restaurant Group, the restaurant serves “Chinatown Heritage Food” based on recipes by founder Mr. Mok’s recipes.
We enjoy the traditional Chinese soup offerings here, as well as the Sweet & Sour Pork with Pineapple. In fact, we prefer Soup Restaurant’s version of Sweet & Soup Pork over that of its popular Singaporean counterpart – Putien.

The restaurant pay homage to the Samsui Ladies, which refer to a group of Chinese female immigrants who came to Malaya and Singapore in the 1920-40s.
Known for their trademark red headdress, these ladies mainly hailed from the Shanshui district in modern Guangdong, as well as regions such as Dongguan, Fujian and Chao’an.
Soup Restaurant pays tribute to these ladies by offering classic Samsui dishes such as Samsui Ginger Chicken, Ah Por Fan Shu Leaves, and Beggar Bowl Tofu.
Delicious traditional herbal soups
One main reason why we enjoy coming here is its extensive offerings of Chinese herbal soups.
Soup Restaurant offers a rotation of Traditional Boiled Soup of the Day (RM12.90 per pax) – ranging from peanut lotus root soup, to arrow root soup and old cucumber pork rib soup.
Besides that, Soup Restaurant also offers a fixed offerings of soup such as Double-Boiled Shimeji Mushroom Chicken Soup (RM18.90), Double-Boiled Dried Scallop with Black Chicken Soup (RM23.90), and Double-Boiled Pork Ribs with Four Divinity Herbs (RM17.90).
Lotus Root with Peanuts Soup
Our favourite daily special soup of the lot was the Lotus Root Peanut Soup – as it tasted close to our we cook it at home. We like that they use plenty of pork bones, lotus roots and peanut to yield a naturally sweet and savoury broth.
We like our soup to lean on the savoury side (instead of too much sweetness from red dates) and also do not enjoy dried cuttlefish in our Chinese soups. Hence this version hits the spot for us.
The Arrowroot Soup with Pork Ribs here also had enough sweetness from the pork bones, with additional nutrients from goji berries.
However, we did find the Old Cucumber Soup slightly on the sweeter side here – but still nourishing and tasty.
Sweet & Sour Pork with Pineapple
Sweet & Sour Pork (RM19.90) is a staple dish at most Chinese dai chows (and chap fan stalls) but not may can cook them well.
We really like Soup Restaurant’s version as it has a good fat-to-lean meat ratio (not too much of the former, which most places tend to do) and the batter has that nice crunchy bite.
The gravy also had a good balance of sweetness and saltiness that goes well with white rice.
Hometown Tofu
The Hometown Tofu (RM15.90) is another standard order of ours here.
The tofu is deep-fried perfectly to yield a crisp exterior while the insides remained soft and tender. Topped with fried dried shrimps and resting in a pool of fragrant (and high quality) soy sauce gravy – the execution is simple but tasty.
Samsui Ginger Chicken
The Samsui Ginger Chicken (RM42.90 for half bird) is a special dish created by the Samsui ladies back in the day, and features a plate of boneless steamed chicken served in soy sauce, ginger paste and cucumber slices.
While not as fragrant as our favourite steamed chicken spot at Restaurant Kong Sai (see our post here), the chicken here was still tender and sweet. The ginger paste was not bad as well.
Sambal kangkung
The Sambal Kangkung (RM17.90) here is cooked quite well with enough spicy bite from the sambal, and the veggies retained their nice crunch.
However, we absolutely deplored the Ah Por Fan Shu Leaves (RM18.90) as we thought the thick soy sauce was too overpowering when paired with sweet potato leaves.
Summary
If you’re looking for healthy Chinese fare in One Utama, Soup Restaurant is a place we won’t hesitate to recommend. The service is prompt and attentive too, like any proper Chinese banquet restaurant should be.
