[Pork-free] You’ve seen it. We’ve seen it. We’ve finally tried a meal at Tapestry in Jalan Kamunting, Chow Kit.
Although the place was busy, we were surprised to be seated immediately at 12. I guess, the early bird may catch the worm, but late-risers get the brunch! Also, it may be easier to come in a smaller group.
Jokes aside, the first thing you notice about Tapestry is the beautiful space. At one corner, natural light from the ceiling cascades upon diners, while an antique shelf (replete with stuffed animals and china) dominates another part of the eatery. The cozy atmosphere was further embellished with a real-life Christmas trees and other festive adornments. It’s feels like being wrapped in your favourite Enid Blyton novel next to the fireplace.
Rise & Shine Egg Drop Toast
So how about the food? Surprisingly, good it was. The main attraction has to be the Rise & Shine Egg Drop Toast (RM22) – perfectly scrambled eggs with cheddar, caramelised onions, sriracha aioli and Sarsi-glazed beef bacon sandwiched between sweet Hawaiian buns. There’s only two ways about it – scrambled eggs can only be done well or come out overcooked and under-seasoned. Tapestry’s scrambled is of the former – even the ingredients’ flavors complement each other without dominating the palate.
Eggs Benedict
The missus prefers the Eggs Benedict (RM29). Again, eggs were perfectly poached. However, the eye-opener was the bunga kantan hollandaise sauce and beetroot-cured salmon. The distinctive character of the bunga kantan only presents itself when the sauce is eaten on its own – otherwise, its flavors merely complements the overall dish. Which is amazing, considering how domineering the bunga kantan can be. The same can be said for the salmon. The eggs sit on two croquettes – perfectly cooked with a crispy exterior and warm, moist potato-ey fillings seasoned with chives and onions. Missus thinks the croquettes were outstanding.
In sum, Tapestry scores all the right points for lovely ambiance, thoughtfully melded West-meet-East menu, and brunch food that is actually enjoyable. We all enjoy a good surprise, and Tapestry is definitely one in our books – it is probably one of the best brunch places KL has to offer at the moment for something cozy and inventive at the same time.
