[Halal ingredients, pork-free] Stay WOP, eat sourdough (pizzas)!
We checked out the latest pizza joint in Plaza Damas – WOP Pizzeria, which just opened its doors on 21 Sept (they previously operated in Shah Alam).
Helmed by the dynamic duo of Ikmal and Azara, they bring some sourdough flair to your favourite Neopolitan slices by using the freshest ingredients and dough that’s perfected with time and yeast.
We came hungry on a Friday lunch and took the best seats in the house – at the bar and in front of the oven and workstation.
Pizza menu’s limited to 12 items (much appreciated as we value focus and precision on a few key items) but the toppings and combos are amazing.
Ikmal’s quick on his hands and the pizzas goes into the oven for about 60-90 seconds at 450°C, before emerging with much pazzazz – smoking and slightly charred at the crust.
Our favourite was the Smoked Beef and Rocket (RM49). Guys, this was lovely – beef is sufficiently smoked for 14 hours, so it complements (and doesn’t overwhelm) the pop of arugula and fresh tomato tart. [TIP: We got this pizza on promo for RM35. Before we continue – let’s talk about the key elements! As I haven’t tried sourdough pizza before, I expected it to be slightly tangy. Turns out, I enjoyed the dough – it’s not sour, chewy, slightly “leavened” with a nice mix of air and heaviness.
Secondly, the tomato sauce base is so juicy and flavourful. You know how these bases can be so flat-tasting? Not the ones here. Fresh San Marzano tomatoes are hand-crushed daily, and these are combined with their mozzarella, made with fresh buffalo milk. Dough, tomatoes, and mozarella – the trinity that makes a pizza are executed well here.
The Magherita (RM34) is the litmus test of any good pizzeria. And the one here does not disappoint. The brilliance of the tomato base really comes to the fore in the Magherita.
If you’re gila for cheese – Quattro Formaggi (RM39) will hit the spot with a generous amount of mozzarella, parmiggiano reggiano, gorgonzola and ricotta. I especially love the punch of the gorgonzola. Kapow!
Seats are limited, but service is fast. I really enjoyed the pizzas here and we will come back for more.
