YDT Dessert 苦中一点甜 (糖水铺)
[Non-halal] YDT Dessert 苦中一点甜 (糖水铺) is a newly opened tong sui spot in New Town PJ.
Operating since late 2023, YDT Dessert is run by the same folks behind our favourite Kam Heong Braised Duck Rice stall (see our post) just next door.
YDT Dessert offers everything from traditional tong sui such as Red Bean with Purple Rice and Wheat Porridge, to Shaved Iced desserts such as Mango Snowflake and Soya Pudding.
YDT Dessert in PJ New Town
YDT Dessert is opened from noon to midnight (and extended to 1am on Thurs-Sat, but closed on Tuesdays) – so it’s perfect spot for those looking for a healthier after meal desserts.
In fact, we’ve quite happy that a number of tong sui shops has opened around in the Klang Valley in the last few years, as we’ve been craving for a healthy dessert (as opposed to shaved iced and ice-cream, which can be laden with too much sugar).
YDT Dessert offers traditional tong sui and more
We arrived at 8.30pm on a Saturday evening to find a short queue at the front counter.
The space here (which used to be a sundry shop in the past) has been upgraded for a modern and comfortable seating.
Besides dessert, YDT also sells savoury items such as Scallion Oil Noodles, Fried Rice, and Char Siew Sou.
There’s also Nyonya Kueh, Fried Ice-Cream and Fried Nian Gao if you’re craving for some light bites.
Lucky free Dragon (fish) balls!
Since we spent more than RM18 for our bill, we were able to participate in the angpow lucky draw which yielded us a free bowl of Curry Fish Balls! Yay!
Do not be fooled. While the curry broth may look watery, it actually has a spicy bite that really tingles the tonsils. In a way, this was a good contrast to the sweet tong sui we ordered.
Peanut paste with sesame seed tang yuen
We ordered three bowl of tong sui to share. The Peanut Paste (RM6.80) is a favourite in our family and we thought the one here was decent.
We found the peanut paste to have a more pure peanut taste without the roasted fragrance, as we suspect they did not add any peanut butter to this. The consistency was thick enough and we could also taste the pandan in the tong sui. The colour may look light but it actually tasted quite alright.
We added Sesame Seed Tong Yuen to our bowl. These were nice – generous filling of sesame paste encased in soft skin.
Gingko Barley with Beancurd Skin
The Gingko Barley with Beancurd Skin (RM6.80) comes with a generous amount of gingko and barley. We do have a preference for a lighter gingko barley but this version was palatable as the dessert has enough fragrance of barley and soy.
Bo Bo Cha Cha
We prefer the Bo Bo Cha Cha (RM6.80) to the Gingko Barley. The consistency is thick and they were really generous with the ingredients with lots of yam and sweet potato cubes, taro, sago and coconut milk. The dessert was also very fragrant with a strong yam flavour and enough pandan kick.
This Bo Bo Cha Cha is almost a meal by itself.
Summary
If you’re looking for a place for delicious tong sui, YDT Dessert is definitely worth checking out.
