[Halal] It’s the first full work week of 2020, so we checked out Baba Low’s for affordable Peranakan food.
Baba Low’s original restaurant is in Tengkera, Melaka and this is the second branch they have in KL. The other branch is actually nearby at Lorong Kurau. What we like about this place is the fast service, affordable prices and simple but delicious Nyonya food.
Mee Siam
The Mee Siam (RM7.80) was nice – taste was definitely leaning more towards the savoury side and it was not too spicy. I like that it wasn’t dry.
Nyonya laksa
The Nyonya Laksa (RM8.80) was rich with santan and had enough bunga kantan (torch ginger). Not the best in town for me, but decent. My friend did enjoy it and wanted to bring her parents here for this.
Nasi lemak
The Nasi Lemak (RM7.80) seems to be cukup makan (enough standard) for me. Those who like sambal on the sweeter side would enjoy this.
Fish with cili garam Kangkung bawang belacan Curry chicken Pongteh chicken Udang masak nenas
The sharing dishes were not bad – we enjoyed the Fried Ikan Kembong topped with Cili Garam (chilli paste) and the Curry Chicken (tender meat and flavourful curry) for RM8.80 each. The Udang Masak Nenas (RM9.80) – prawns cooked with spicy pineapple gravy – was quite enjoyable with the nice combination of spiciness from the sambal and sweetness of the pineapple.
For RM14, you could get the Udang Masak Nenas with rice and sambal bendeh (okra with sambal).
I don’t like the Pongteh Chicken (RM8.80) here – I find it too sweet and heavy on the soy sauce.
Popiah Kangkung bawang belacan
Popiah (RM5.80) and Kangkung Bawang Belacan (RM7.10) were ok-ok only.
Service is fast and we like the open, rustic decor. Also, there are designated parking spots for customers in front of the restaurant – which is great as parking can be hassle in this area.
