Durian tasting platter, anyone?
As Ming is not a fan of the fruit, Max only eats durian once a year. Thankfully, he was able to share the fruits with both our mums who absolutely enjoy durians.

A durian “omakase” experience
Here’s our detailed review on the Musang King Durian Tasting platter from DurianBB.com.my. For RM150, we got two sets of five different pulps of the freshest cultivars of the day.
We think this is such a good idea. Usually, we are only able to eat 1-2 whole durians for a meal. With this tasting platter, we were able to sample five different cultivars and taste the nuances in one sitting. Think of this as a durian “omakase” experience!
DurianBB only serves the freshest yields of the day, with only Musang King and D24 as confirmed pulps. For our platter, we received Gang Hai D158, Red Flesh D101, Golden Bun D13, D24 XO, and Musang King.
What cultivars we ate
Here are our thoughts on each cultivar:
Gang Hai D158 – Like its pale yellow flesh, this cultivar was very light with a sweet, milky taste. A perfect starter to our “course”.
Red Flesh D101 – Compared to Gang Hai, this breed has a more creamy texture, but remains on the sweeter side. It’s very easy on the palate.

Golden Bun D13 – This is where it starts to get interesting. The flesh is smooth and buttery with a more prominent bittersweet flavour profile. The deep butterscotch colour is extremely eye-pleasing.
XO D24 – Our personal favourite. The flesh is extremely creamy and custardy – providing the most satisfying mouthfeel of the lot. XO is of a higher quality than regular D24, as it has a nice ‘alcoholic’ aftertaste due to extra fermentation in the pod. It is perfectly sweet with the right amount of bitter pull at the end. So good!
Musang King – The king of King of Fruits! DurianBB’s 30-year Musang King’s fruit is rich and fragrant with a complex bittersweet taste. The pulp is creamy with very tiny seeds (means a lot of flesh!).

Verdict
Overall, we were very pleased with the platter. We got about 2-3 seeds for each cultivar. All of the pulps were fresh (opened and delivered on the same day) and harvested from their farm in Raub, Pahang.
As the fruits were only opened when they ripened – not sooner or later – all the pulps were aromatic, supple and not dry. We were most pleased! RECOMMENDED!
