[Muslim-friendly] We love mom, and we love appam! Love Mom Restaurant is located in Taman Chi Liung, Klang.
This Indian restaurant is particularly known for its Sri Lankan dishes cooked by Paramaswari Nadasan, who everyone calls Mummy in the area (read this excellent article by Lee Khang Yi on Malay Mail).
Mummy’s crowd favourite here is undoubtedly the appam (or hoppers) – a type of South Indian pancake made from fermented rice batter.
Love Mom Restaurant in Klang
Love Mom offers four types of appam here – the Plain Appam (not on menu), Appam Paal, Appam with Brown Sugar, and Egg Appam.
Each appam is cooked here with pans over the small fire resulting in hoppers with lovely crispy edges and a soft centre.
Besides appam, Love Mom Restaurant also serves idli, thosai, chapati as well and South Indian dishes for lunch.
All about the appams
We ordered all four varieties of appam to share with our mom – and they were delicious!
The Plain Appam (RM2.20) already excels with its crispy edges and the pillowy centre that’s mildly sour with a tinge of salt.
The Appam Paal (RM2.20) is one step above the plain pancake with the addition of coconut milk in the centre. We actually found this more delicious due to the softer and creamier centre, and a more prominent salty note.
The Brown Sugar Appam (RM2.50) was a surprise hit. We expected the hopper to be cloyingly sweet, but it was actually quite balanced and added a nice smoky caramelisation to the pancake.
The only savoury hopper here, the Egg Appam (RM3.50) also delighted us with its lovely runny yolk (and whites) which makes for a good pair with vegetable curry.
Honestly, all four appams were delicious but we enjoyed the Paal the most for that creamy santan taste.
Apart from appam, Love Mum also serves idli, chapati, vadai and puri for breakfast. We thought the Chapati was decent.
Delectable Sri Lankan dishes
Love Mum Restaurant also serves Sri Lankan dishes for the lunch crowd.
The dishes make their way out of the kitchen from 10.30am onwards. Popular dishes here include the Mutton Varuval, Fried Chicken, Curry Chicken, Fish Cutlets and Minced Shark Meat.
The shop runs on an economy rice/self-service concept where customers take their own plates and help themselves to the dishes. The servers will come by shortly to calculate based on your portions.
Delicious fish cutlets and minced shark meat
Among the dishes we tried, we really enjoyed the Fish Cutlets.
Shaped like the regular fish balls, we found the fish cutlets to be sufficiently spiced with plenty of fish meat and onions inside.
We also enjoyed what we later discovered post-meal to be Minced Shark Meat (aka Fish Puttu), a popular Sri Lankan dish. The flaky grated coconuts went well with the fish bits, with lovely accents from the curry leaves and mustard seeds. However, we will likely refrain from taking this dish next time, for personal reasons.
Between the Fried Chicken and Fried Fish, we prefer the former. The fried chicken looked unassuming but it was nicely marinated with spiced batter, and the meat was surprisingly juicy and tender.
No complaints about the Spinach Dhal and veggies either.
Summary
Overall, we recommend coming here for the appam and the Sri Lankan dishes.
The clean and spacious restaurant makes for a comfortable dining experience. Despite us being there at 11am on a Saturday, the place wasn’t crowded at all.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
