[Halal] Lum Kee Laksa in Section 14 PJ Medan Selera has been selling laksa since the 1970s.
Operated by two uncles in their 80s, Lum Kee Laksa sells various types of noodles such as curry mee, asam laksa, prawn mee and laksa Siam.
Lum Kee Laksa in Section 14 food court
Lum Kee is an establishment here in the Section 14 Medan Selera food court.
Numerous stalls have come and gone in this food court, but this laksa stall has stood the test of time due to its popularity.
Growing up in Section 14 (and studying in BBBS nearby), Max recalls this stall fondly, but it has been many years since he ate here.
However, the stall saw a resurgence in popularity recently, after it was featured in a few Youtube videos.
Lum Kee Laksa is Muslim-friendly
The stall operates in the Halal section of the food court and is popular with the Malay clientele. All of the food ingredients are Halal-certified.
Curry Mee
While it was the Assam Laksa that first launched their 53-year-old business, we opted for a bowl of Curry Mee and Laksa Siam during our recent visit. Both bowls only cost RM7 for the large portion.
Let’s start with the curry mee. Lum Kee’s curry broth is rich in spices, mildly spicy, and not too heavy with the santan. If you’re looking for a broth that is not too thick or coconut-y, you’ll enjoy this.
The noodles are served with the usual tofu puffs, fish cakes, long beans, and four plump cockles.
Special laksa Siam
However, the special item here has to be the Laksa Siam – a dish noodle rarely found in the Klang Valley.
The dish takes inspiration from the owners’ Nyonya heritage in Penang.
While the broth has a fiery red colour similar to the curry mee, the taste reminded us a lot of asam laksa with its special combination of sour, sweet, umami, and spicy.
The laksa’s paste is made from lemongrass, chillies and shallots.
The laksa is finished with some pineapple, cucumber, chicken, prawns, and mint leaves for a piquant touch. The thick and round rice noodles (used for Asam Laksa) are used here.
Verdict
If you’re looking for a taste of old-school curry mee, do check out Lum Kee Laksa. We definitely recommend the laksa Siam for something different and unique.
