[Muslim-owned] Oh apong, oh sedapnya!
Ice-cream parlours are dime a dozen in KL, but Oh Apong stands out in offering gula apong as its main ingredient.
Oh Apong in Kota Damansara
This cafe is located in Emporis Kota Damansara.
We really like the decor here with its lush flora, and use of rattan furniture to accentuate the local theme.
What is Gula Apong?
Having just opened in May last year, this parlour shines the spotlight on apong sugar.
Similar to the very popular gula Melaka and gula Kabung (originating from Pahang), apong is made from the sap of a Nipah palm tree found in Sarawak.
The founder, Ellyna Mercian first discovered this golden syrup during a business trip to Kuching. She then decided to introduce this sugar to the KL-lites by opening this cafe with her family.
Similar to gula Melaka, apong has that salted caramel quality – which is a perfect addition to any dessert.
Signature Ice-cream
During our recent visit here, we decided to try their Signature Apong Ice-Cream (RM8 for a large serving) – soft-serve ice cream topped with cereal and a drizzle of apong syrup.
We enjoyed this very much. The soft serve was adequately creamy with a clean vanilla-like flavour.The apong syrup provided enough of a sweet caramelised accent.
We were surprised it was not as strong-tasting as Gula Melaka – providing just a light touch of sweetness to the treat. The ice cream surprisingly went well with our Flat White (RM11).
More treats to discover
Apart from its signature ice cream, the cafe serves an assortment of pastries and cakes such as the Salt Bae (RM14) – a moist chocolate cake with salted caramel frosting and caramel drizzle.
Pastries available during our visit include Ham & Cheese Danish, French Butter Croissant, Pain Au Chocolat, and Oat & Cranberry Cookies.
Verdict
This cafe is definitely worth a visit to try out their signature soft serve. We really enjoyed the interior with its lush potted plants and rattan furniture – making it a lovely space for a catch-up with friends.
