Tonkatsu Fry-ya Tokyo Review | One of Shinjuku’s Best Tonkatsu
[Non-halal] There’s no shortage of great eats in Tokyo, so we always make it a point to ask our local friends for their best recommendations.
Tonkatsu Fry-ya came highly recommended by a friend who used to live in Tokyo. It was so good that we’ve made a return visit on each of our last two trips to the city.
Tonkatsu Fry-ya in Shinjuku

Tonkatsu Fry-ya is tucked away in the basement of an unassuming building in Shinjuku. The restaurant is small and cosy, with just a handful of tables and bar seats, giving it a warm neighbourhood feel.

The tonkatsu comes coated in a light, crisp layer of panko breadcrumbs, accompanied by shredded cabbage and the restaurant’s special homemade mayonnaise.
But the real star here is the quality of the meat.

The pork cutlet may look slightly undercooked with its faint pink hue, but it was incredibly juicy and tender. Our favourite, though, has to be the chicken breast (sasami), which was unbelievably moist and tender with an almost sous vide-like texture.

The chicken sasami tonkatsu alone is worth the admission ticket. If you’re looking for an exceptional tonkatsu in Tokyo, we’d happily say “ya” to Fry-ya.
