[Non-halal] Finally, another spot for gukbap in KL!
Gamtan Meat Shop has been gaining popularity for its Korean BBQ, but we were more interested in its weekday set lunches – particularly the dwaeji-gukbap 돼지국밥 (pork bone soup rice), a dish that’s surprisingly hard to find in the Klang Valley.
Our favourite dwaeji-gukbap

Alongside gamjatang, dwaeji-gukbap is one of our favourite Korean comfort foods. We’ve had excellent versions at Um Yong Baek in Busan (see our post here), and closer to home, at Sigol Madang in Mont Kiara (post here).
At Gamtan Meat Shop, the dwaeji-gukbap is only available as part of its weekday lunch sets, with just 50 bowls served daily.
We visited both the Hartamas and Imbi branches to give it a try.

Dwaeji-gukbap at Gamtan

The gukbap starts at RM32 and comes with the usual banchan. For RM48, you can upgrade to a set that includes a plate of boiled pork slices (suyuk 수육).

For the uninitiated, the pork bone broth is typically served with very minimal seasoning. You’ll need to add salt and pepper to bring out the flavours, although our preferred condiment is fermented shrimp (saeu-jeot 새우젓), which adds a lovely briny umami to the broth.

The pork slices in the soup were fresh and tender, and paired beautifully with kimchi. We also found the portion quite generous on its own, so we’d only recommend the set if you’re after extra protein or have a particularly big appetite.
Strangely, we had to ask for saeu-jeot at both branches. The Imbi outlet doesn’t serve it as a standard condiment, which feels like an odd omission for a restaurant serving gukbap.
Sundubu-jjigae set

Besides the gukbap, we also enjoyed the Sundubu-jjigae Set (RM19), which offers excellent value for money. The stew had just the right amount of spice, and we appreciated the generous amount of prawns and squid. We also liked the touch of saeu-jeot used as a garnish.

The Steak Sotbap (RM38) was satisfactory as well, featuring tender steak cubes over rice. The addition of cheese and egg yolk gave the dish a rich, creamy texture.

One dish that didn’t quite work for us was the popular Truffle Potato Pancake (RM18). While the pancake itself was thick and crispy, we weren’t particularly fond of the processed cheese and mayonnaise dip that accompanied it.
Conclusion
So, are the gukbap and weekday lunch sets here worth trying? Absolutely.
We’ll definitely be back one day to see if the Korean BBQ is just as good.
